Languages, Culture and Internationalism

Our holistic and innovative vision have enabled us to create a multicultural education model based on the command of Spanish, English and French, as a way to promote cultural ownership and transformation, and connecting with many customs and regions, transforming our students into citizens of the world.

How do we do this?

  • The command of languages is transversal in impact, because it supports academic, personal and social lessons.
  • Learning languages within real contexts.
  • Teaching is focused on content (Content-Based Approach), in order to integrate language skills with academic content in different knowledge areas of the curriculum
  • Students from Grade 6 to 11, have the opportunities to explore the different cultures associated with these languages, such as the cultural exchanges to France, Canada and the United States.

When teaching our mother tongue we take the functional-communicative approach, which favors the use of language and the development of skills.

At each of the stages of school life, our language is present from several standpoints:

Preschool:  We strive for the children to feel comfortable with their language, to acquire the language code, and to clearly express their ideas and feelings

Primary:  The universe of symbols as well as the individual approach to it begin to settle in, leading to creation and argumentation.

Middle School: Students are able to recognize their strengths in writing, reading or oral argumentation. They make use of oral presentation as a necessary and efficient communication strategy.

High School: students must be able to produce oral and written material, to express concrete reasoning and opinions on their reality. They also explore creative pursuits and make proposals based on research and the composition of more elaborate texts.

In order to graduate, students must sit the TOEFL exams, an international certification on their degree of English fluency.

At Gimnasio Fontana we promote the command of French as a third language from Grade 6 till Grade 11. We follow the guidelines from the Ministry of Education of Colombia (on foreign languages) and the standards of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Teaching is focused on the communicative approach, where students are immersed in real and recreated situations, allowing them to learn the language, and also learn about francophone culture.

In Grade 11, students can choose to sit the Diploma in French Language Studies (Diplôme d'Etudes en Langue Française - DELF) exam, which certifies their competence in French.

Main benefits:

  • The option of studying at a francophone university
  • Better job opportunities.
